Mike Palmer

"I'm a very practical person who is only satisfied with things that really work properly. I believe that anyone can develop their effectiveness if they embrace opportunities to experiment with new tools and techniques that they feel comfortable with. I see the main focus of my job as introducing people to new ideas and motivating them so they feel confident to do this"

Mike Palmer specialises in consulting and training work, covering all aspects of leading small cross-functional projects. With a consulting career spanning 25 years, he has successfully helped many organisations to work towards best project practice in a variety of assignments, including:
  • Design and implementation of a new product development process for Kimberly-Clark Europe - leading to huge savings in project efficiency and costs.
  • Design and delivery of Project Leadership courses for Kimberly-Clark, Citigroup Investment Bank, ICI Paints, National Starch & Chemical, & Quest International.
  • Project manager coaching at Kimberly-Clark.
  • Design and delivery of Project Management courses for Brit Insurance and Chase Manhattan Bank.
Mike advocates a very pragmatic approach to projects and believes that people learn most by reinforcing the theory with practical activities.  He believes that projects have to be led; so project tools can only be effective if  they are used to galvanise action and motivate the team to focus on meeting the expectations of the various project stakeholders.

Previously, in his career in the Royal Navy as an engineer officer, Mike soon learnt that achieving high performance comes from a team that is both technically competent and highly motivated to put in the hard work to solve the problems that inevitably occur.  To make a difference, the leader has to balance the operational demands of the project with the needs of the team - leadership that demands strong character, inter-personal, and technical skills.

Notable project management experience in the Navy included development missile trial launches at Cape Kennedy, managing dockyard refits of submarines and frigates, study projects for new ways of specifying warship requirements.

Further details of Mike's experience can be seen by clicking on the links to the left.
