Reading Skills

"One of the best courses I have attended. It was very useful for both business and personal life and will help me immensely with my job. Highly recommended."

GP Registrar

We all have to cope with increasing amounts of information. Reports, circulars, regulations, e-mails, technical journals, textbooks and newspapers all make demands on our time. There is too much to read and not enough time to read it!

By digesting this information faster, and more efficiently, you can be far more effective, every day. We can help you to unlock your potential in this area.

Benefits

With our reading training, we can help you to dramatically improve your skills to:

  • Read more - in less time - with better comprehension.
  • Improve concentration.
  • Apply a planned approach to business reading.
  • Improve your retention of what you have read.
  • Use a range of reading strategies to suit different purposes and material.

Our Approach

Before a reading workshop, we ask each delegate to complete a short questionnaire. This provides the tutor with information about the delegate's reading and hopes for the course. This allows the tutor to adapt the course to meet individual needs.

Course Overview:

Typically the course content includes:

  • Initial assessment of reading performance.
  • Understanding the reading process.
  • Reducing the physical limitations to reading performance: reading single words, re-reading, sub-vocalisation and involuntary eye movements.
  • How to maintain concentration.
  • Development of a planned approach to reading.
  • Skimming and scanning for fast reviewing.
  • Memory and retention.
  • Note taking.
  • Applying the techniques to your own work material

Development Method

We cover these topics by first helping the delegates learn the limitations of their present approach to reading, through discussion and a number of exercises. We then develop new reading skills with the aid of reading rate accelerators, eye exercises and comprehension tests. These methods allow for different learning styles.

We then encourage delegates to practise their new skills on their own work material as this gives them the confidence to apply the techniques back in the workplace.

Everyone is encouraged to progress at his or her natural pace and the atmosphere is not at all competitive.

Logistics

The course is typically run over two days. We recommend that the maximum number of delegates is 12 as this allows sufficient time for individual coaching.
