Mentoring
Initially schemes can include two separate populations, and these will be referred to as:
- Scheme 1: Directors and Heads of Department who will best be served by sourcing external mentors, and
- Scheme 2: Members of staff who will be mentored by the Heads of Department
Which Type of Mentoring Scheme?
Several varieties of mentor schemes are possible. Some examples might include:
- The familiar model where an older, wiser person works with an aspiring young person.
- 'Buddy' schemes for new entrants.
- Mentoring designed to help overcome career blocks for minorities, such as ethnic minorities or the disabled (more common in the public rather than the private sector).
- A blend of mentoring and coaching which may, or may not, be integrated into the performance management process and the reward system.
A Phased Approach
Phase 1 - Research & Analysis
Phase 2 - Report & Design
Phase 3 - Pilot for Scheme 2, Matching & Training
Phase 4 - Scheme 1 and Roll-out of Scheme 2
The Benefits of this Approach
While it might appear that introducing a mentoring scheme is complex and fraught with risks, the reality is that:
- A well thought through scheme is an extremely powerful developmental tool - both for the organisation and the individuals involved.
- Involving the participants at the design stage ensures buy-in and their ownership of the scheme.
- The key to success is in the planning and designing of a scheme to meet your specific needs.
- Rolling out a successful pilot and monitoring the early stages allows for any unforeseen glitches to be modified.
