Writing

Everyone can write, but not everyone can write well. We have all become used to the brief informality of e-mails and texts; so when we are faced with a report or justification, we find it difficult to know where to begin, how to structure our points, or check our use of English. It all takes much longer than we thought.

The ability to construct an argument or sell an idea is as important in written form as it is face-to-face.

Benefits

  • Increased confidence in your ability to write business documents.
  • Know what good business writing looks like.
  • Write documents that put the main points across clearly and are easy to read.
  • Save the time you spend producing a finished result.
  • Better editing.
  • Establish an appropriate writing style which is clear, direct and concise.

Our Approach

Writing to influence is a very different skill from writing to report information. We work with you to understand the communication issues and design the training that will solve them.

We can run a range of different writing courses. Recent client needs included: 'Effective Technical Reports', 'Proposal Writing', 'Writing Business Plans' and 'Making Your Case in Writing'.

Course Overview:

To help individuals improve their writing style we typically help them to analyse what separates good and bad writing. This covers such topics as:

  • Clarifying the aim - and what the reader wants.
  • Applying a process to all writing.
  • Using mind maps to structure thoughts.
  • Choosing an appropriate order to achieve your purpose.
  • Emphasising points using appropriate layout and visuals.
  • Understanding the building blocks of correct English usage: words, sentences and paragraphs.
  • Measuring readability - The Clarity Index.
  • Editing and using msWord grammar tools.

Development Method

These very practical courses involve many individual exercises to develop fluency in applying the principles of effective writing. We encourage participants to bring their own material and analyse it during the course. We can also design special exercises to reflect situations participants will encounter. This gives them the opportunity to practise in a risk free environment.

How we work with you

Every company is different and every employee is an individual. To reflect this, we tailor all training to the specific needs and culture of your organisation. We can work with you to build a programme for your staff or, if you have already identified your training needs, we can provide the workshops that exactly meet those needs.

Logistics

Our writing skills training typically takes one to two days, working with groups from four to twelve.
